I told you recently that I wanted to get serious about improving my chess game. Well, I might have taken a slight detour. Or maybe not. It depends on how you look at it. I stumbled across Gambonanza, a chess rogue-like that is basically Balatro but for people who prefer kings and queens over aces and joker.

I have had Balatro on my „must-play“ list for a while now, but the poker theme always held me back. I do not know poker, and honestly, I never really liked it. Chess is a different story. I love chess; but… I am just not particularly good at it yet.

Chess Rogue-Like for Busy People

The logic I am using to justify this distraction is simple: Gambonanza actually helps you learn chess. It forces you to think several moves ahead and visualize the board in ways a standard match might not. But before we get into the theory, let me break down what this game actually is.

Gambonanza takes the familiar movements of chess and drops them into a tactical, rogue-like structure. You are not just playing a standard match; you are trying to survive.

You move your pieces to capture enemies and avoid being taken yourself.
Between rounds, you can upgrade your pieces or gain special abilities that change how the game plays.

Much like Balatro, one wrong move can end a run, making every decision feel heavy and important.

Why It Fits the „Mayhem“ Lifestyle

You are probably sitting there wondering what is wrong with me.

I have mentioned before that I barely have time to sit at a computer, yet here I am picking up another game. Shouldn’t I be spending that time losing 10-minute matches on Chess.com to actually get better?

You are not wrong!

But here is the thing: Gambonanza is on mobile.
I found it for iPhone, and that changed everything.

Sometimes you just need a change of pace. I tell myself that Gambonanza is contributing at least a little bit to my overall chess skill, but in reality, it is just fun. It fits into the gaps of my day. After I finish my 25 daily puzzles, I can jump into a run for six or seven minutes.

The biggest factor for me is the flexibility. I can open the app whenever I have a spare second and close it instantly if something important comes up. I can pick up exactly where I left off later. That is my main excuse for avoiding those 10-minute live games: I rarely have a guaranteed, uninterrupted block of time that long. I am working on it, I promise.

I just like a change

I wanted to share this because, alongside the official chess app, Gambonanza has earned a permanent spot on my phone. If you are looking for a deep, strategic experience that you can carry in your pocket, I highly recommend checking this out.

It is available on both Steam and mobile. It will cost you about €10, but for the amount of depth and fun you get in return, it is a total steal. Whether you are a chess pro or just someone who likes a good strategy loop, give it a try.

Drop me a message if you try it out. I would love to hear if you managed to break the game with some wild piece upgrades.
