I am a massive MGK fan. I have followed the transition from rap to pop-punk and back again, and usually, I am the first one in line when a new drop hits the atmosphere. But we need to talk about his new track with Wiz Khalifa.

If you haven’t heard it yet, it is a vibe. It is smooth, the chemistry is there, and it is a solid piece of music. But here is the problem: it is not going on the Music of Mayhem list.

The Difference Between „Cool“ and a „Banger“

Don’t get it twisted. I like the song. I will probably listen to it while I am out walking the dog or driving through Town. But my „Music of Mayhem“ playlist is a sacred space.

It is reserved for the tracks that actually hit you in the chest. I am talking about the kind of energy you get from „Fix Your Face“ or the raw intensity of bands like Sleep Token and Bring Me The Horizon.

That list is the „Pulse“ of my musical life. If a song is just „cool,“ it doesn’t have enough weight to survive there. A true Mayhem track needs to be a certified banger. It needs that „gritty“ edge that matches the brand. If it doesn’t make me want to push harder during a CrossFit session or relax me when I’m reading, it probably doesn’t belong in the top tier.

Solving the Playlist Mayhem

I spend a ridiculous amount of time organizing my life. I have an entire system for my notes called the PGN-Method to keep my „Second Brain“ from turning into a digital graveyard. It hit me that I should probably apply that same level of logic to my music.

Right now, my playlists are a bit of a mess. I am constantly trying to decide if a song is „Mayhem enough“ or just a good tune. It is creating the kind of mental friction I usually try to avoid. So, here is the plan for the new hierarchy:

  • Rap of Mayhem: A dedicated home for high-quality hip hop.
  • Rock of Mayhem: Where the best guitar-driven tracks live.

etc. you get the gist.

  • Music of Mayhem: The elite tier. The absolute bangers that transcend genre.

This way, the „Music of Mayhem“ list stays lean and mean. It becomes the „Project“ folder of my library: only the stuff that is currently breathing and moving the needle stays in. The genre-specific lists act more like the „Grid,“ providing a solid foundation of great music without cluttering the main event.

Perfectionism is usually my enemy

I often get paralyzed trying to make things exactly right before I post them. But when it comes to curation, you have to be a bit of a snob. If you let everything into your top-tier list, the list stops meaning anything.

The MGK and Wiz track is good, but „good“ is the enemy of „great.“ I am keeping the main list pure.

What do you think? Do you keep one massive „everything“ playlist, or are you a curation freak like me?
